Kandilli
In recent years, when the name Kandilli is mentioned, the first thing that comes to mind is the astronomical observatory. However, in the past, mentioning Kandilli would bring up memories of the glorious Ottoman era, the palaces of sultans, romantic boat trips, and the songs that lovers used to sing to their beloveds during these journeys.
There are many tales about how this neighborhood acquired its romantic name:
Some link the story to Sultan Murad IV; according to one narrative, the Sultan built a palace surrounded by lanterns here.
Another tale says the Sultan decorated the cypress trees with lanterns.
In another version of the story, a priest supposedly asked a favor from the Sultan and would place a candle every evening in the Sultan’s garden.
Some people say that lanterns were lit here to establish a primitive maritime lighthouse.
And finally, there are those who believe the neighborhood was named because of its abundance of candle workshops in the area.
