During the 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation, he served in the landing units as the “Surgeon Responsible for the Wounded and Chief Medical Officer of the Surgical Hospital”. His outstanding success in helping the wounded recover their health during this operation was appreciated by the Turkish General Staff, and Op.Tbp.Yzb. Harun Özkan was awarded the “Medal of Distinguished Courage and Self-Sacrifice – Gold Medal”. This medal was awarded to a doctor for the first time. Thus, Dr. Özkan became the only “Combat Veteran Doctor” in the Armed Forces to hold a gold medal.

For his achievement during the 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation, he was also awarded the “National Struggle Gold Medal of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus” by the government of the TRNC.
