The principle of autonomy is related to a person's ability to make decisions about themselves independently. Even if a person is a patient, they have the right to make independent decisions about their own future. In medical practice, it is necessary to respect this right. The criteria for autonomy are determined by a person's ability to act and decide willingly, knowingly, understandingly, and without being under controlling influences.
BENEFIT THE PATIENT!
The primary duty of the physician is to be medically beneficial to the patient. The principle of beneficence can manifest as absolute benefit, which involves either preventing harm or increasing good; sometimes, it may also mean increasing the balance of benefit over harm.
EVERY PATIENT IS EQUAL!
During my 30-year professional life, I have always presented treatment alternatives to my patients, including their advantages and disadvantages.
When planning treatments, my professional philosophy has always been:
“DO NOT APPLY A TREATMENT TO YOUR PATIENT THAT YOU WOULD NOT APPLY TO YOUR OWN CHILD.”
